Fact 1: They are the World's Second-Oldest Military Aerobatic Team

Formed in April 1946, the Blue Angels took to the sky for their very first public performance just two months later. Their legacy stretches back eight decades, making them the second‑oldest formal military aerobatic team in the world – surpassed only by the Patrouille de France, founded in 1931.

The 1946 Blue Angels team included CDR Butch Voris, Boss; LT Al Taddeo; LT Maurice Wickendoll; LT Mel Cassidy; LTJG Gale Stouse; LTJG Ross Robinson; and LTJG William May.

Fact 2: Their Iconic Diamond Formation Began in 1947

Historic 1957 and modern photos show U.S. Navy Blue Angels aircraft flying in tight formations.

In 1947, Flight Leader Lt. Cmdr. Robert “Bob” Clarke introduced what would become one of the most iconic formations in aviation: the Blue Angels Diamond. Along with it came two maneuvers still flown today – the Diamond Loop and the Diamond Barrel Roll – signature moments that define the team’s precision and discipline.

Bonus Fact: During the Diamond Formation, the jets can fly as close as 18 inches apart. That jaw‑dropping proximity is only possible through practice, trust, and unmatched discipline.

Fact 3: Pensacola Hasn't Always Been Their Home Base

Six U.S. Navy Blue Angels aircraft fan out above the Pensacola coastline, leaving white smoke trails over the Gulf.

While Pensacola is now synonymous with the Blue Angels, it wasn’t always their home. Before settling at NAS Pensacola in 1955, the team moved several times— NAS Jacksonville, NAS Corpus Christi, NAS Whiting Field, and then NAS Corpus Christi again. Their journey across multiple bases helped shape the team into the national icon they are today.

Fact 4: They Have Flown 11 Different Aircraft Types

Today’s Blue Angels are known for their sleek F/A‑18 Super Hornets, but their history spans 11 different aircraft, each representing a chapter in the evolution of naval aviation:

F6F Hellcat – 1946
F8F Bearcat – 1946–1949
F9F‑2 Panther – 1949–1950
F9F‑5 Panther – 1951–1955
F9F‑8 Cougar – 1955–1957
F11F‑1 Tiger – 1957–1968
F‑4J Phantom II – 1969–1974
A‑4F Skyhawk II – 1974–1986
F/A‑18 Hornet A/B – 1986–2010
F/A‑18 Hornet C/D – 2010–2020
F/A‑18 Super Hornet E/F – 2020–Present

Each aircraft brought new capabilities, new challenges, and new ways to push the limits of flight.

Fact 5: Where Did the Name "Blue Angels" Originate?

A fun twist in Blue Angels history: when the team was formed, they weren’t called the Blue Angels at all – they were only known as the Navy Flight Exhibition Team.

The name “Blue Angels” debuted at an air show in Nebraska in July 1946, thanks to Right Wing Pilot Lt. Maurice “Wick” Wickendoll, who spotted the phrase in the New Yorker magazine’s “Goings On About Town” column. When he shared it, Boss CDR Butch Voris loved it: “That sounds great! The Blue Angels. Navy, Blue, and Flying!”

And just like that, a legendary name was born.
